Health care organizations recognize the importance of including physicians at their leadership tables:
Physicians, however, have little formal training or experience in dealing with administrative issues. There are many educational offerings and training experiences available for those who have decided to take this step in a new career direction. However, for those who are contemplating a change or who are still wanting to remain clinically active, few options are available that can offer affordable, convenient opportunities.
Learning to Lead - This program is designed to give physicians and potentially other clinicians a chance to “put their toe in the water” and see if the administrative world matches their interests and career aspirations. It is also meant to provide organizations with a tool to develop interest in physicians to pursue leadership roles.

Learning to Lead is a six-month virtual program that utilizes a cohort model of up to 15 physicians. It is designed to educate physicians on the major topic areas that health care leaders must understand to be successful. Additionally, the curriculum is designed for busy physicians who wish to gain insights and improve their leadership abilities while also exposing and gaining greater competency in business issues.
Leadership – Personal and Organizational Concepts
Technical – Business and Administrative Concepts
One topic area is covered each month; these monthly modules will be led by industry leading subject matter experts who provide readings and two hours of prerecorded content along with an assignment to complete. At the end of the month, the cohort meets in a live virtual session at an agreed upon time for 1.5 - 2 hours to discuss the content and their assignments. Time is reserved at each live session to discuss leadership implications related to that month’s content.
Each participant completes the Strengths Finder Assessment and has a one-on-one coaching session with me, a Gallup certified Strengths Coach. This assessment will assist in the assignment of the participant’s mentor and provide a starting point for personal leadership assessment.
Each participant has a personal mentor who is a seasoned physician leader. These mentors are available throughout the program to provide guidance and assist with any pressing issues. Mentors will meet with their participants at least once per month.
Learning Activities are assigned pertaining to the module topics. These assignments help ensure competency in the topic and take approximately two hours to complete. They require the support and cooperation of the participant’s sponsoring organization. The mentors and Subject Matter Experts are available throughout the month for email exchanges and with office hours for more in-depth assistance.
A capstone project will be required at the conclusion of the Program. Participants will reflect on their original learning objectives, what they’ve learned about themselves and healthcare organizations, and what action steps they intend to take as a result.
The University of Minnesota, Interprofessional Continuing Education designates this hybrid activity for a maximum of 56.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
